Despite a very soggy morning, the inaugural running of ‘Loop the Vedder Half Marathon & 10km’ took place this past Sunday (November 17) on the Vedder Rotary Loop Trail following the official trail Grand Opening on Saturday.

Well over 300 runners braved the rain for this first-time event.  The half marathon runners circumnavigated the Vedder River from the north side of the Vedder Bridge to Keith Wilson bridge, returning along the south side of the river.  The 10km run was a shorter loop from Vedder Bridge out to Hopedale Road and back along the Peach Creek Trails before finishing the last 3km on the main Vedder Rotary Trail.

Despite some slippery, muddy conditions, the first course record was set for both race distances.  In the men’s half marathon event, Dex Koeleman took top spot, running his first ever half marathon, at a time of 1:21:14. Top finisher in the female half marathon event was Angela Froese from Chilliwack, with a time of 1:37:46.  First place in the men’s 10km race was Brendan Wong with a time of 35:43 and top female was 13-year-old Aryka Bennett of Chilliwack with a time of 46:26.

There was a total of 343 participants registered for the event, comprising of 180 runners in the 10km race and 163 competing in the half marathon loop. Full official results can be viewed at www.peaksnvalleys.ca.

The race is organized as part of the Peaks-N-Valleys Trail Series.  Loop the Vedder is the first locally organized half marathon & 10km race event in Chilliwack.  For each event in the series, race organizers partner with a local non-profit organization that supports youth initiatives and recreation in the outdoors.  A portion of funds generated through registration for each event goes directly to the selected community partner.  The first community partner of Loop the Vedder Half Marathon & 10km is the Chilliwack Park Society (www.chilliwackparksociety.ca) who will benefit from the first contribution from the Loop the Vedder event.
