Chilliwack, B.C. - Paul Martens thinks he has a golden idea about a stinky problem. The Chilliwack contractor has invented an odour free toilet. Ventex is a venting system where all the unsightly odours get sucked out of the toilet bowl.
Marten's took his idea to CBC's the Dragon's Den, and passed the first audition then trucked off to Toronto last April. “You make your pitch in front of the Dragon’s and we were probably in front of them for an hour and a half…two hours or so and they edit it down to a five minute little spot.”
(Paul Marten's and his wife make their pitch)
He can’t say whether anyone invested or not, but he drove out with all his equipment and installed one of his systems in his producers house. However his pitch did get picked to be on the show. Marten’s and his Ventex system will be featured March 14th.
As for sort of being a TV celebrity, Marten’s says it was great. Everyone in Toronto treated him like gold, and he and his wife actually got a little honeymoon out of it. (They found themselves with a few extra days in Toronto so they trucked off to Niagara Falls). But the one thing he didn’t expect was to see a couple of policemen hanging around. Marten’s says that big table with stacks of hundreds and thousands of dollars in cash is actually real money. The cops are there just in case someone gets a funny idea.
