Chilliwack, B.C. – It wasn’t an oil painting for the Chiefs, but they found a way to get things done on Saturday night at Prospera Centre, scoring four unanswered goals to beat the Trail Smoke Eaters 4-3.
The Chiefs had to take the long way home, falling behind in this game 3-0 in the second period. Trail fully deserved to jump out to that lead, as the Chiefs just didn’t have the jump they displayed one night earlier against the Merritt Centennials.
The Chiefs trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes, and they were lucky the deficit wasn't larger, thanks to the work of Mitch Gillam in goal, who stopped 16 pucks in the opening frame.
Brent Baltus scooped up a rebound and put a high shot past an outstretched Gillam at the 12 minute mark. Trail would score twice more in the second, on goals by Erik Cooper, and Luke Bertolucci. It looked like the Chiefs were dead.
It was David Bondra who brought them a little life.
Bondra was hauled down, and awarded a penalty shot halfway through the second period. His deke fooled Trail keeper Lyndon Stanwood for the first Chilliwack tally of the night to cut the Smokies’ lead to 3-1.
Then Malcolm Gould woke up, and really got things started.
The North Vancouver native threaded a pretty cross seam pass from the left wing boards. David Thompson snuck down from the right point, collected the pass and lifted a shot upstairs for his second goal in three games. Matt Revel, and affiliate callup from the Fraser Valley Bruins, earned the second assist.
Gould would strike again at 7:51 of the third, when he took advantage of some nice work from Kody Dhaliwal along the Trail blueline, received the pass, and went high glove on Stanwood to tie the game.
Shea Laurent picked an opportune time for his second goal of the year, when he skated over the Trail blueline along the left side, and unleashed a slapshot that Stanwood just missed with the glove. The puck floated across the line for the winner with six minutes and change left in the game.
Chilliwack has won two straight, and will now travel to Penticton to take on the mighty Vees Friday night.
