Chilliwack, B.C. –  Very quietly, on Saturday night, the local Federal NDP members acclaimed a UFV Professor as their candidate for the 2015 Federal Election, whenever that happens.

Seonaigh MacPherson confirmed on her Facebook page that she had accepted the nomination.

Her bio at the University website states:

As a new faculty member and Department Head in Adult Education, Seonaigh comes with extensive adult education experience in Canada, in adult ESL and teacher education, and in India, in EFL, environmental, health, and refugee education with Punjabi and Tibetan refugee students.

On receiving her Ph.D. from UBC in 2000, she accepted a Killam post-doc at the University of Alberta and later served as Associate Professor in Education at the University of Manitoba and President of TEAM (Teaching English to Adults in Manitoba). Returning to the coast for family reasons, she assumed a post in 2008 as an Adjunct Faculty with the Institute of Asian Research at UBC, as an Instructor at BCIT, and later as Coordinator of ELSA Net.

Recently, she served as Lead Curriculum Designer or consultant on three major adult ESL curriculum design projects in BC for newcomers for use in community (i.e. ELSA) and post-secondary programs. Seonaigh has published widely on the impact of globalization on education and sustainability, including a 2011 book with Routledge on Education and Sustainability, based on SSHRC-funded research on the Tibetan diaspora in Canada, the USA, and India.

In addition, she has published widely on a SSHRC-funded study of intercultural teaching and diversity. Seonaigh currently lives in Chilliwack with her companion dog, Tashi, and a pond of 45 (and growing) goldfish.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has hinted that the fall 2015 election could happen sooner. Experts won’t be surprised. Then the vote could be held before the Mike Duffy Senate scandal reaches the courts.

MacPherson will be up against Louis De Jaeger, the  Federal Liberal Candidate for Chilliwack-Hope and incumbent Conservative MP Mark Strahl.
